Winds of Change

The bout on August 27th ended with a 236 - 70 loss to the Tri City Rollergirls Venus Fly Tramps. The ladies of Tri City were amazing hosts, and great derby players!

The winds of change are moving through the Betties for 2012. Long time Betties players Lacy Brawler and Pretty Peeved have retired from the team, as have P Doddy and Diva Zapata. We will miss them, and wish them well. Although they won't be on the flat track, expect to see them in blue in the crowds on game day, cheering on the Betties! New players will be drafted to the team from the D-VAS on October 15th to fill our roster and compliment the team skillset. Buliding on the foundation laid by Hot Roller over the years, new Betties captains Misery Mae and titmouse will lead the team through the upcoming season. Expect good things to come for 2012!

You don't have to wait until the new year to see us play next though! On Saturday October 1st, we will face the Hammer City Harlots in our new home, The Bunker, just down the street from the Hangar. Doors open at 5pm, with the Betties hitting the track at 6pm. Following this bout will be CN Power vs. the Hammer City Eh! Team; two bouts for the price of one! You can't go wrong with a sweet deal like that - see you there!

Travelling to TriCity - August 27th!

The Betties are travelling to the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo area on August 27th to challenge the TriCityRG Venus Fly Tramps in a double header roller derby show down. When we last met the Venus Fly Tramps in a 20 minute bout at Beast of the East 2011, the Fly Tramps walked away with the victory. Now that we're meeting in a full-length bout, we aim to turn the tables. Come on down and cheer us on!

The double header also features the Gore Gore Rollergirls against the Vicious Dishes!

Our next bout is this Saturday May 14th against the reigning Gore Gore Rollergirls! Come early and you can see our little sister league, Toronto Junior Roller Derby, play their first bout ever!

There will be games showcasing feats of strength, mental awareness, comedic and musical features, tons of great raffle prizes and of course, shots, beer, and other favorite beverages! SCB to take on Beast of the East!

The ladies in blue are packing our bags and superhero utility belts and heading out to Montreal to play in the Beast of the East tournament this weekend. This is a double elimination of epic proportions, 16 teams, 29 games,2 days...2 for $5 beers...its sure to be a good time. Betties have been working hard all year and are looking to bring some serious black and blue ass kicking to the track. With games reduced to 20 mins, these games can belong to anyone. Even if your not making it out to Montreal this weekend, you can rep our Betties by wearing blue and cheering us on in spirit.

Come out to the The Hanger at Downsview Park this weekend to check out some hard-hitting derby action as the Smoke City Betties take on the the Death Track Dolls.

Both teams are looking for their first ToRD season win in their second game of the season. The Betties have had some serious turn around since our last bout and will be hitting the track harder and tougher then you ever imagined. So grab on to your seats and build the beer-a-myids high this ones gonna be a night to remember.

Betties vs. Chicks Ahoy - This Saturday!

This Saturday we'll be throwing it down at The Hangar (Downsview Park) against the Chicks Ahoy, in our first regular season ToRD bout of 2011!!

Both teams have one away bout under their belts this year - the Chicks Ahoy! suffered a crushing 131-72 defeat at the hands of the RVRG Slaughter Daughters early in February, while the Betties took away an 81-79 win against the RVRG Riot Squad. This means almost nothing though, as the Slaughter Daughters is the more experienced of the two RVRG teams - what I'm saying, is that its sure to be one HELL of a tight game this weekend! BRING IT ON!

Tickets are on sale now online and in-store for this Saturday's bout. Last-minute decision makers will be able to purchase a ticket at the door.

This past Saturday we drove out butts out to Ottawa to take on the Rideau Valley Rollergirls Riot Squad - and WON! Thus snaps the losing streak that plagued the revamped Smoke City Betties in 2010, who have been working hard to change things for 2011. We're glad our hard work paid off, but it's not over! We'll be pushing it all through the season to give Toronto the best derby we can!

Last night the Betties had their first official team practice of 2011 at Downsview - and what a practice it was! There was no "easing back into it", it was full on tits-out on the track.

Complimented by our new draft picks, and coaches that will keep us moving, the 2011 Betties are looking like a sharp bunch. The scent of change is in the air. We're going to BRING IT in 2011!

Greetings loyal Betties fans!

titmouse here, figuring out this whole Blogger thing. As you may have noticed, we've been a little quiet online this year - except on Twitter, where we're a chatty bunch - you should add us! Follow @DerbyBetties for daily updates on your ladies in blue.

It's been a tough year for your Betties so far in 2010. As you may have noticed from our Team/Girls page, we've done some serious rebuilding. As you may also have noticed from watching out games, our skillz are improving :D Sooner than you know it, we'll be too hot to touch! Get your autographs now, before you have to fight off the hoards of fans fighting for our attention.

Hey SCB lovers,
Long time, no talk!

Since we spoke last, we beat the Chicks Ahoy! and took on the Gore Gore Rollergirls...

It was a tough game and was running close but the Betties ran into some bloody trouble and had to accept an upsetting defeat.
Hot Roller got slammed in the first period and had to leave the track on a stretcher, leaving the bench rattled and down a main pivot. Then, in the second period, Dyna Hurtcha got kicked out while she was wearing the star for brawling on the track with Mia Culprit. In the end, I am happy to report that Hot Roller is ok (she just had extreme whiplash) and will be returning to the track for the championship. As for Dyna, it turns out that she wasn't really physically attacking Mia Culprit and the expulsion call was a misunderstanding... rather she was trying to get herself untangled from Mia's legs and skates.

Anyway... WE ARE IN THE CHAMIONSHIPS and we are going to KICK your ass if you don't come! We are taking that boot and there is no way to stop us...

We had the Thames Fatales (FCRG) out to practice with us yesterday and we learned some awesome tricks that will most certainly piss off some Gories. Thames play in Kitchener on November 7th... so check 'em out! http://www.forestcityderbygirls.com/

Betties take on the Chicks Ahoy and win!

The Smoke City Betties took home another win on Sunday against last years Champions; The Chicks Ahoy!

It was a close game and those Chicks were hitting hard, but they were the ones hurting at the end of it all when they had to eat the defeat.

The Chicks will be green with envy when we take that boot from them at the end of this season...

Hello all you hot SCB lovers!

So much has happened to the Betties in the last few months, I hardly know where to begin...

The Betties ran into a bout of bad luck while preparing to take on the Beast of The East. Our training started with a bang when Poison Thorn; one of our newest and most talented skaters, broke her leg. The break may have taken her off the track, but it hasn't broken her spirits as she continues to heal and her bones become stronger than ever before. Look out for her later this season as she will surely return to the track with a vengeance and a thirst for victory. Until then, check out this hottie sitting bench side, cheering on her Betties and giving the glare of death to our opponents.

After a couple more bumps in the road, we headed to the Beast of the East with our shiny blue shorts and prepared to meet the meanest teams of Montreal. We played the best of the best and took on the Slaughter Daughters (our very own Slaughter Lauder scored a grand slam during this match screaming "Mama's Home!"), The Death Row Dames and Les Contribanditas....twice! After two days of blood, bruises and hard hits, the Betties took home third place. Smoke That!

Now that we're back in the big smoke, things are still on fire! Dickless Tracy and Lady Frost decided that their derby days weren't done and re-joined our pack after seeing our hunger for victory in Montreal. We also managed to snag the hot and dangerous Pretty Peeved, formerly of the Bay Street Bruisers, and Crimson Shivers from Calgary. Now we have ginger power times three (Crimson, Marvel S Maven, and Slaughter are all smoking hot red heads)!

As if we didn't already hit the jackpot with our new skaters, we manged to pick up three new additions that will surely join us in our quest of kicking ass! We're not going to reveal their identities at this time for fear that the other teams might drop out of the competition once they realize that they're gonna get smoked!!

New Betties!

Hello all you smoking hot SCB fans!

I am pleased to announce that the Betties are back in gear and ready to burn up the track. We are banking for that boot this year and to help us get to the Championship, we've added some hot new talent to our roster.

Poison Thorn is a hot little firecracker who is ready to smoke the opponent with her super-human speed and show-stopping good looks. Watch out for her this year as she jams her way into your hearts!

Janice the Menace is sure to cause some chaos on the track, and she'll break your heart just as easily as she breaks bodies. Check her out this year, she'll be the one in black and Betty blue, hitting down the opposing jammer and speeding through the pack.

Kerry (who's derby alias is not being revealed at this time due to Smoke City Betty security risks) is one of the best skaters that the Big Smoke has seen in this century. You wont need to know her derby name as you'll know it's her jamming when the other team is crying. She's a smoking hot red headed amazon who has the other teams shaking in their skate boots.....

WARNING to opposing teams: We're not the same Betties that you once knew. We've been in severe training mode and we're going to knock you out of the competition.... we may look cute in our uniforms, but you'll be wearing our colours too once we're finished with you; black and blue...

2009 is the year of the Betties... we hope to see you in the stands. Stay tuned for our schedule and location.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please rise for the Singing of the National Anthem.

That is the best way to start an evening - though this evening started
3 days before the game actually started. This past year, it was my
pleasure to attend yet another Smoke City Betties fundraiser at Hurricanes Roadhouse. Now as many of you might already know, these
evenings tend to start early, and go late with a whole evening of
Party time in between. And since I now have a "grown UP" job I am not
much of a partier anymore. Though every time these nights happen be it a Thursday, Tuesday or Saturday, I am there is full force singing my brains out and steadily becoming more off key as the night goes on - as most people who have seen me - well, they know.

That fateful evening there began an auction raising money for our
beloved Betties, and I wanted the grand prize, and so did my brother,
and so did some guy... while the bids grew higher and the bar grew
louder. I started putting in phone bids for my brother in Fergus who
is a huge rocks fan! Did I say huge? Yeah, there was a time when my
brother wanted to go pro and play for the rocks.... though as you can
see by the photos, not the toughest looking guy.

Anyhow, while bidding my brother got more and more excited about sitting with me - and screaming and drinking beer. Which is what a couple of townies - such as we - often do. Finally after yelling out my final bid,the bar went silent, understanding that this Victory was by far the greatest of the evening. We had won, he was excited, I was excited, we were yelling and drinking beer already. What a great family bonding experience.

As I went to claim my prize it was clear that we had chosen a night that would live on in infamy forever. I bought a hat, 2 shirts (one for me, one for my brother) and we were going to promote the Betties. You can see by the photos that we were decked to the nines in SCB colours, and we yelled loud and drank beer!

What a great night, thanks Betties, we'll see you at the next fundraiser.

A Funny Little Thing Called Derby

We were smoking cigarettes and killing time outside George Bell Arena, about to face the leopard print-clad and faux blood-smeared defending champions, the Gore-Gore Rollergirls. Apart from the usual mixture of butterflies and impatience that I tend to feel before each bout, it struck me how curiously calm I was. Gone was the panic of last season, when everything was new and I was wearing skates from 1972. After two years of practice, politics, and pre-game nausea, had I become jaded? Was this inexplicable calm a case of ennui or the mark of experience?

It’s hard to retain the sort of giddy of excitement I felt as a new skater. When you’re just starting out, it’s all about meeting new people, learning new skills, and being part of something big and seriously cool. Whenever I’m stuck at a party and there‘s an uncomfortable lull in conversation, I bring up derby. Everyone is interested, and everyone loves derby. Men want to know if it's fake (it's not), and women want to kick ass and sign up. It’s an instant conversation starter that allows me to seamlessly slip out of my shy-girl-that-couldn’t-think-of-anything-to-say reality and into my fearless rollergirl persona.

Perhaps my fear of being derby-weary is more burnout than apathy. After a disappointing first bout, it looked like the Betties might have fallen victim to a kind of sophomore slump. The result of a sleepy off season turned out to be a team that was just not gelling. It was a tough lesson, but we came back and improved in a way that surprised even ourselves. The results of the first bout and the last, both against the Gories, could not have been more different: we got a cataclysmic smackdown in the first, and we had them running scared in the last. At one point, we were just eight points behind and they were looking tired. We thought we might win. Even now, just thinking about it, I feel simultaneously excited, determined, and frustrated. It’s that mixed-up hungry feeling one gets when they want to win, and they want to win bad. Anyone who feels passionate about something knows that feeling well.

The Betties have worked hard all summer. Getting from point A to B in four months, from being pure chaos on the track to becoming an organized Bettie Blue derby machine, took hard work and sacrifice. The mysterious calm most of us felt before our final face-off with the Gore-Gores was not indifference, but the result of knowing that we had done all we could do to prepare for this final showdown. We were ready.

With the 2008 season now over, and what the Betties have decided will be a rigorous off season in the near future, I look forward to seeing the dozens of Fresh Meat come out to practice, clamouring to be a part of our league. Their fresh-faced enthusiasm and spotless attendance records serve as a potent reminder of how lucky we are to already be part of this funny little thing called derby.

Oops! We did it again! This time we CRUSHED the Bruisers with a score of 87-55 and we loved every minute of it. It was clear that they were getting frustrated as penalties began to rack up and the ref team threatened to call off the game due to unnecessary violence. The huffed and puffed but they couldn't blow these Betties down!

And this means that the Smoke City Betties will officially be participating in the semi-final match on September the 6th!!

C'mon out to see all the hard hitting action, and to cheer on your favourite Betty!

Back in Black...and Blue!

I am pleased to announce that the Betties have defeated the Dvas with a score of 148 to 60!! After a slow warm-up to get into the 2008 season, it is clear that we've got our game on now!

We are ramping up to take on the Bay Street Bruisers next week in a secret underground match that will be as vicious as Monichrome's athlete's foot.

Look out Bruisers... you're gonna get smoked!!

Betties Rule!

It's been a tough year for the Betties, but after a long, cold winter skating on the cracked concrete of the brewery, and drinking some of Toronto's finest ale; the Smoke City Betties are ready to take on the assassins, pirates and greedy bankers that make up some of the meanest teams in Roller Derby.

Last season was a good one for the Betties. Our super powers were in full force as our jammers tore up the track and our blockers demonstrated their super human strength.... the Betties were a force to be reckoned with. Slaughter Lauder, Memphis Kitty and the legendary Jewl Kicker proved their jamming abilities by leaving their opponents eating the smoke of their skates, and wafting in clouds of dust and fear.

The season left us Betties with a taste of victory on our tongues and pride in our hearts, yet the winter came and it proved to be a cold one. Two of the finest skaters in all of Toronto; Lucky Lauder (pivot, and superhero extraordinaire) and Emrock (co-captain, jammer, and one of the fastest skaters on this side of the galaxy) decided to leave the sport in search of other adventures. The rest of us Betties were left to seek out new super human skaters to add to our roster and take into our family.

Sue Deuce, Municipal Waster and MsTree Malteaser are the three newest members of our pack. Everyday, with the guidance and help of the founding members of the Smoke City Betties, their powers grow and their speed increases. Sue's eyes glow a fiery red when she concentrates on the enemy, and she can almost take anyone out of the game with a single glance. Waster's strength has increased to the point where she can throw her opponent off of the track with minimal effort, barely making full contact, and Malteaser is on her way to becoming one of the best jammers in Toronto.

Sure it can be a little hectic adding new people to the pack dynamic; and all teams have their ups and downs.... but we skate in a pack now and are all up to the same speed. Sometimes it takes a few bumps on the track to re-align the wheels... like when we underestimated the skills of the Gore Gore Rollergirls; the dead cabaret performers in leopard print polyester. That was a tough break for the Betties. While we were hanging at the clubhouse during the winter, they were in roller derby speed training mode. As they got faster on that track, the Gores could feel our shock and amazement and began to feed off our super powers, leaving us low on energy.

We came back to the track to face off with the Death Track Dolls. Their team grew in numbers and in strength and we had an absolute blast playing a team that was almost as equal in skill and defense to us Betties. Alas, the game ended up as a tie; the first ever tie in Toronto Roller Derby history! Unfortunately, the penalties we accumulated by tapping in to our super human abilities left us short players in the overtime jam and we ended up short three points to the Death Track Dolls. Dyna Hurtcha even got ejected from the game for being too powerful and letting her strength overpower her mind...... it happens.

Tomorrow we take on the Dvas who also have a pretty good team this year, even though they lost many players to secret service assassination reassignment across the globe. Despite the Dvas strong defense and new found speed, we have a secret weapon against them; Goldie Lock N'Load. Goldie used to be a Dva, but after realizing she could tap into a source of unexplainable strength, she decided to join up with the Betties and fight the good fight (with the better team). Goldie is thirsty for some Dva blood, and these assassins will be black and blue after the Betties skate over them.
